What to Expect at Your First Photoshoot

If you've never worked with a professional photographer before, it's totally normal to feel a bit nervous. Most of my clients tell me they were anxious beforehand but had a great time once we started. Here's a walkthrough of what actually happens.
Before the Session
Once you book, we'll have a quick conversation about:
- What kind of photos you're looking for
- Where you want to shoot (or I'll suggest locations)
- What to wear (I'll give specific guidance)
- The best time of day for your session
This isn't a formal consultation — it's usually a quick text or call to make sure we're on the same page.
Showing Up
On the day of your shoot:
- Arrive a few minutes early if you can
- Bring your outfit changes in a garment bag
- Have any props or accessories ready
- Don't worry about bringing water or snacks — I've got that covered
The first few minutes are just us chatting and getting comfortable. I don't jump straight into shooting.
During the Shoot
Here's the honest truth: you don't need to know how to pose. That's my job.
I'll guide you through everything:
- Where to stand
- What to do with your hands
- Where to look
- How to adjust your posture
Most of my direction sounds like normal conversation — "turn toward me a bit," "lean against that wall," "laugh like I just said something funny." It feels natural, not stiff.
It Goes By Fast
A one-hour session feels like 20 minutes. We'll move between spots, switch up poses, and try different things. By the end, most people say "that's it already?"
I shoot a lot during our time together — typically 200-400 photos depending on the session length. You won't see all of those, but it means I have plenty of great options to choose from.
After the Shoot
Here's what happens next:
- I go through all the photos and select the best ones
- Each selected photo gets individually edited
- Your gallery is uploaded to our cloud platform
- You get a link to view, download, and share
Standard turnaround is 1-2 weeks. I'll send you a couple of sneak peeks within a day or two.
Common Worries
"I'm not photogenic" — Nobody thinks they are. But that's what good lighting, angles, and guidance are for. I promise you'll be surprised.
"I don't know what to do with my face" — Neither does anyone else. I'll tell you exactly what to do. And candid moments between poses often produce the best shots.
"What if I don't like the photos?" — In hundreds of sessions, this hasn't happened. But revisions are included in every package just in case.
Ready for your first session? Let's make it easy — I'll walk you through everything.
