How to Prepare for Your Portrait Session

Getting ready for a portrait session can feel overwhelming, but a little preparation goes a long way. Here's everything you need to know to make your session smooth and get photos you'll love.
Choose Your Outfits Wisely
The right outfit can make or break your portraits. Here are some tips:
- Solid colors work best — avoid busy patterns or logos that distract from your face
- Coordinate, don't match — if it's a group shoot, pick a color palette rather than identical outfits
- Bring options — pack 2-3 outfit changes so we can get variety
- Iron everything — wrinkles show up more on camera than in person
- Avoid neon colors — they reflect onto your skin and are hard to color-correct
Pick the Right Time of Day
Lighting is everything in photography. The best times for outdoor portraits:
- Golden hour (1 hour before sunset) gives warm, soft light
- Blue hour (just after sunset) creates a moody, cinematic feel
- Overcast days are actually great — the clouds act as a giant softbox
We'll work with you to find the perfect time based on the look you're going for.
Location Matters
Dallas-Fort Worth has incredible spots for portraits:
- Downtown Dallas — urban vibes with great architecture
- White Rock Lake — natural, green settings
- Deep Ellum — colorful murals and gritty textures
- Fort Worth Stockyards — rustic, western feel
We're happy to suggest locations based on your style, or we can shoot at a location that's meaningful to you.
Day-Of Checklist
On the day of your session:
- Get plenty of sleep the night before
- Stay hydrated — it shows in your skin
- Do your hair and makeup before arriving (or book a pro)
- Bring any props that tell your story
- Arrive a few minutes early so we can chat and you can relax
Relax and Have Fun
The most important tip? Don't stress about posing. We'll guide you through everything. The best photos come when you're relaxed and being yourself.
