How to Take Better Photos With Your Phone

I shoot with professional cameras for a living, but I take more photos on my phone than anything else. Your phone is always with you, and modern phones are genuinely capable of great photos if you know a few tricks.
Clean Your Lens
Seriously. Your phone lives in your pocket collecting fingerprints and lint all day. A quick wipe with your shirt before shooting makes a noticeable difference — especially in backlit situations where smudges cause haze.
Use Natural Light
The single biggest improvement you can make is paying attention to light:
- Face the light — turn your subject toward a window or the sun (not directly into it)
- Avoid overhead fluorescents — they make everyone look tired
- Cloudy days are great — soft, even light with no harsh shadows
- Golden hour works on phones too — that warm light before sunset is universally flattering
Stop Using the Front Camera for Important Photos
The rear camera on your phone is significantly better than the selfie camera. Use a timer, prop your phone up, or ask someone to take the photo. The quality difference is massive.
Composition Rules
A few simple rules that instantly improve your shots:
- Rule of thirds — put your subject off-center, not dead middle
- Leave negative space — don't fill every inch of the frame
- Get closer — phone zoom is digital and destroys quality. Move your feet instead
- Try different angles — get low, shoot from above, find an interesting perspective
Edit, But Don't Overdo It
Most phone photos benefit from minor editing:
- Bump the exposure slightly
- Add a tiny bit of contrast
- Straighten the horizon
- Crop tighter if needed
Skip the heavy filters. They date your photos immediately. If you want a consistent look, find one preset you like and use it sparingly.
Portrait Mode Has Limits
Portrait mode on phones has gotten really good, but it still struggles with:
- Hair (especially flyaways)
- Glasses
- Complex backgrounds
- Moving subjects
Use it for simple, clean compositions. For everything else, the regular camera mode is more reliable.
When to Hire a Pro
Phone photos are great for everyday moments. But for milestones — graduations, engagements, family portraits, events — the difference a professional camera, lighting, and editing makes is worth it.
